Banita Jacks Murder Case - Update
Washington, D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty is going to fire at least six child welfare workers for dropping the ball in the Banita Jacks murder case. Ms. Jacks stands accused of murdering her four children. Considering the facts of this case, somebody had to go. I'm glad the mayor is acting swiftly, now they need to get work so nothing like this occurs ever again

Looking at those sweet smiling faces is heartbreaking. I wonder how the caseworkers feel now that they have blood on their hands.

Perhaps I'm being cynical, but I wonder if anyone could have predicted this one. But heads had to roll on this one, I suppose, and the mayor had to act swiftly and symbolically.
I catch myself thinking about the older girl, the 17 year old, and wondering whether she knew her mother was sick and if she did, who in the family did she reach out to for help.
Tasha212 - I agree completely. It's too bad that losing their jobs is the only thing that is happening. In my view their failure to do their jobs is criminal!
As the daughter of a mentally ill woman, I have mixed views of this situation. I do believe that the mentally ill have rights that need to be protected, but when the mentally ill are parents, especially custodial parents, there needs to be regular monitoring of them, to ensure that things like this dont occurr. But this particular case was a monumental disaster on a wide variety of levels.
