Hi Professor Tracey,
Have you read Push by Sapphire?
Hey somebody just referred to 'Push' in a conversation last week. Maybe the universe is telling me to read it.
MDC - I have read Push and I have taught it to college students. It's a tough, but fruitful read.
SheCodes - You should read it, but fair warning it's hard on the emotions.
We need to start a reading circle online.
Professor Tracey,
I read Makes Me Wanna Holler when it first came out in '95. The thing that I remember most about it was Nathan McCall discussing him and his friends running trains on girls when they were teenagers. I also remember it as a story of redemption.
BTW, I listened to the podcast last night and appreciated ur comments with regards to a call for justice for men who commit atrocious crimes against black women and girls. I still feel that in rare cases u can protect urself by using a little common sense, but there is never an excuse for rape regardless of whether the girl used good judgment or not. As black people, I think we need to start viewing certain types of crimes as reprehesible and throwing people out when they commit them. Until that happens none of us will be safe.
Tasha
I read this book when it first came out but can't remember what it was about.
