Reason #336 That China Never Should Have Been Awarded The Olympic Games
China has revoked the visa of American athlete and Gold Medal winner, Joey Cheek. The interesting thing is Mr. Cheek is not competing, he is a winter sport Olympian. Cheek was going to the Summer Games to support the athletes that are members of the organization that he founded, Team Darfur. The organization works to raise national consciousness of human rights violations in Darfur and China is up to its neck in maintaining the current situation of blight and hopeless in the Sudan.
Now, Joey Cheek is my man. He's from my adopted second home of Greensboro, North Carolina. He's the true definition of the gentlemen athlete. Cheek is dedicated to his sport and his education. He is also a humanitarian. He actively protests against the horrific situation in Darfur and he puts up his hard-earned money for the same cause as well. He also has no problem being a role model for others.
When he won the gold medal, he kept a promise of going back to his hometown high school and sharing his victory with the students there. Mr. Cheek attended Dudley High School, a predominantly black high school in the city. He stepped up for those kids and they greeted him with open arms as another one of their famous alumni. He's a hero at that school and it's well-deserved. He also made monetary donations to the school as well.
It's a damn shame that Cheek will not be at the Olympics. He represents what an Olympic athlete could achieve with the fame and money that comes with winning a gold medal.
And on a final note, when I think about how much more money the members of Team USA Basketball have in comparison to Joey Cheek, I wonder how many of them are members of Team Darfur? How many black athletes period are members of Team Darfur? It just kills me that white athletes are more down for causes that affect black people that our own black folks.
