Black Folks - Stop Being Cheap And Lazy! Stop Watching BET To Get Your Black Sitcom Fix And Buy The Damn DVDs!

Black folks, I love ya, but if one more person comments that they got "caught up" watching the BET Awards last night because they were watching one of the endless re-runs of A Different World, I'm really going to blow a gasket. Stop supporting BET and support those corny sitcoms ya'll are hooked on by buying the series DVDs!

A Different World, The Cosby Show, What's Happening!, Good Times, Sanford and Son, Girlfriends, Living Single, Martin, 227, Gimmie A Break, The Jeffersons, That's My Mama, Different Strokes, The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air, The Jamie Foxx Show, House of Payne, Everybody Hates Chris, The Bernie Mac Show, even Amos and Andy are all available in some capacity on DVD!

Black folks whine all the time about not getting the same opportunities as white folks. The entire ten years of Friends was released all at once. Why, because they knew white folks would by the DVDs. Black sitcoms are released one season at a time based on sales. This is simple logic. If ya'll buy the DVDs up, the movie companies have a reason to release the next season of the series on DVD. Stop being cheap and lazy!

Considering how long Moesha, Hanging With Mr. Cooper, Family Matters, Half and Half and The Parkers ran on the air, why aren't these shows available on DVD? Just asking.

And P.S. - If you make over 35K a year and have no significant bills, i.e. students loans or house note and can't afford to buy a $20-35 dollar DVD set once a month, you are mis-managing your money and you need a second job!

The only DVD series i would consider buying is A Different World but the only season that has been released is the first one and that worst season. So I watch reruns on BET; I see nothing wrong with that.

@Music Lover

Many black bloggers and readers complain about the programming of BET, particularly the hip hop videos and some of the original programming like Hot Ghetto Mess. The solution to changing programming like this is to stop supporting BET and the people who advertise there. If black people continue to watch it, it defeats the purpose of criticizing, protesting, or boycotting against BET.

And thanks for proving my point, you won't buy the first season, so good luck seeing any future dvd issues of the show. Oh well. Black economics at its best.

I'm so upset that there is only Season 1 of ADW and Living Single...which I have both of. I will not watch BET in order to watch ADW (which when the second season was to be released, I had PRE-ORDERED a copy and they hurt my feelings by saying it wasn't going to be released!!). I do watch OXY in order to see Living Single. Truth is, I really wanted to watch ADW on BET, but I was determined not to undermine my pact in not watching the station.

Real Talk!!

I only wish BET was a premium channel that you had to pay for.

If I ever get a chance to particiapte in some sort of poll requesting that BET for cable viewers is an option I'll be the first to send in my ballot.

I know ADW and Cosby are/were on Nick at Night, WGN and some other cable channels. All the Living Single seasons are available as a box set because I bought it 2 months ago. I really miss Half & Half!!

Actually, the reason they are probably not on DVD is b/c out of the above sitcoms you listed, Half & Half is probably the only one worth watching again on DVD.

I'm doing my best not to take offense to this post...esp. the cheap and lazy and need-a-second-job comments (particularly that one, since I just had a debate with this one high-horse riding guy on this subject about a week ago).

@Randi -

Why would you take offense? My comments were not directed at your personally. Tell me why you object and then we can discuss it.

With that said, I am tired of black folks whining about BET, but still watching it. We should accept the half-assed state of BET and watch the channel in silence if we are not willing to do the alternatives to dismantle BET.

When black folks have an alternative, that is to support black hollywood with their dollars, they don't do it. They make every excuse in the world.

Black people want it both ways all the time. We want to complain about how we are portrayed, but we are unwilling to put our money where our mouth is to support change.

Money is what talks in Hollywood. So, if black folks keep buying bootleg movies and cds off the street, fail to purchase the real dvd products when made available, and keep depending on cable tv to "do the right" in entertaining us, then we will continue to have BET.

Amen, Professor Tracey!! We really do want it both ways.

Prof. Tracey: I apologize: I left out the smiley face in my previous comment, meaning that I was just kidding about ME getting offended, but I could see someone reading some parts of that post and getting a little offended.

I agree with you, we do need to support good Black Hollywood with our dollars, but honestly, some people don't have those dollars...even if they are working 2 jobs (I know a few). Times are a little tough for some people right now.

Besides, I think ADW is not aired on BET anymore. I'm disappointed, but I say Thank God, I won't have a reason at all to watch BET.

Like I said in your previous post, for some reason, even the 'creme de la creme' (some of my friends included) still watch the awards show and the channel constantly. When I challenge them about it, they come with that same old line: "They ain't talkin' bout me!" If we can't even get the more sensible and educated ones in our race to stop supporting BET, how do we get "the ones in the hood" (hope I don't offend with that statement) to stop??
