Must See Documentaries - Jonestown: The Life And Death Of People's Temple And Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story
This sad story frightened me as a child and the devastating impact of the story 30 years later is no different. Jim Jones was a monster who picked the right people to victimize. Soledad O'Brien redeems herself with this work.
Meet the very scary man who destroyed how politics are played in America forever. Lee Atwater is the man responsible for absolutely without scruples political tactics. His mentee and close buddy was Karl Rove. And even though he has been dead for nearly 20 years, his fingerprints remain on the Republican party and on American politics. This film is truly eye-opening in terms of understanding white folks in the Republican party. The rest of us are out of our league.

you are correct...soledad did redeem herself. i thought the documentary was fascinating. i read that a few of jones' children also survived (a son and 2 daughters, i think). i was hoping they were going to be on the documentary, but i understand why they were not. i'm sure cnn will replay this...a definite must see.
Ever see that fictional classic flick Elmer Gantry? (I love old films.) It's a great movie, and gives a good idea of where our modern day snake oil salesmen, tricksters and con-artists come from.
I saw MSNBC documentary on Jonestown last Sunday, and to say that it had an effect on me would be an understatement. Just powerful. I had trouble sleeping after watching it.
Mega-churches and the prosperity gospel cults are the next Jonestown tragedies.
