The Struggle Continues - Transit Cop Murders Black Man On BART Train

The murder of that young brother on the BART train is a damn shame and black people should be pissed, but I'm with Ta-Nehisi Coates on this one. Black folks should get equally pissed at the fact we are murdering each other at alarming rates. It's time for everyone to put on their grown-up undies and stop giving a pass to our people for doing dumb ass stuff that hurts us all.

I disagree. One has nothing to do with the other. Police officers (bart or otherwise)shooting an unarmed person in cold blood and crime (period) are not the same and I will not be led to the same anger at both. I am upset with all crime. White on white, latino on latino, black on black etc. I am more angry at police (bart or otherwise)on unarmed people crime.

@Cinque -

Then I have no idea the point you're trying too make then. I find it interesting that when the topic is about black folks taking responsibility for themselves, someone comes along talking about other folks that have nothing to do with it.

Black folks have a smaller population,. so it's okay if we kill each other? That doesn't make sense. I can guarantee that at least three black men died the same day this unfortunate young man was murder, but with the exception that they were killed by another black man.

The circus this BART shooting will become, should be the same circus that comes every time one black person murders another. Love Thy Neighbor has been around a lot longer than Protect and Serve.

I go back to my first point. One has nothing to do with the other. I am more angry at a police officer sworn to "protect and serve" shooting someone in cold blood than I am at statistics that pointing out how bad our race is over another. That is who they are comparing the numbers to....other folk. Other folks do count when you are talking about numbers and crime. I love all my neighbors...black, white, asian and latino. I am just as mad at black crime as I am about any other crime. With the example you just gave not only were the 3 black men killed that night but there 5 latinos killed by latinos, 7 asians by asians and 12 whites by whites. You said we should be just as angry at the numbers...I am more angry at the police action.

@Cinque -

And I will go back to what I said before, you're missing the point of my post in the first place. I don't think you read the Coates piece attached to this post, so we are having two different discussions.

And that is okay. Your point of view really has nothing to do with the point I'm trying to make. I agree with your view,. but as I said it had nothing to do with the point I was making in the post.

I stand by this, if the black preachers, politicians, activists,. and regular black folk can get all up in arms over a police shooting, they should have the same response to black folks killing each other over nothing. It's contradictory and hypocritical otherwise.

Thanks for the discussion.

@Cinque

No apologizes necessary. Your point was right and well taken. One day maybe everyone will care about everyone.
