The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency Goes From Feature Film To HBO TV Series

This is actually really cool news, but my blogging brother Chris over at Nat Turner's Revenge raises an extremely compelling point about how Hollywood and the publishing industry treats our black authors and their works.

The series was written by a white Scottish author.

Hopefully HBO will actually nurture and stick with the project. I actually think it might have a better shot as premium TV than as a feature film. The audience for softer, indie adult films with black leads can be tough to get.

Chris raises a good point about how the decisions are made to turn these books into movies.

I have to admit, however, that I am also excited to see Jill Scott in this role - for me, it is a nice countertext to a film like "Push" that has been getting a lot of press lately. I don't have anything against "Push" but the plot summary of "The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency" sounds new and different (and dare I say, a little more uplifting).

To be honest, I have a special place in my heart for HBO after "The Wire," which I loved. But would it have been nice to seem them make a film by a black literary author - certainly, yes.

I can't wait for this. Loved the books and Mildred said what I was going to say. The author is White but has lived in Botswana for a couple of decades.
