Batton Down The Hatches!
I was hoping to spend the summer travelling around the U.S.A., but it's looking like I might be spending the summer panicking with most Americans. The U.S. economy is looking truly frightening and it looks like our government has no real clue how to help its citizens. How long will it be before the media starts talking "depression" instead of "recession"?

It's gonna be bad. REALLY bad.
My advice: 6 months supply of food and water. Cash on hand and if you can afford it gold/silver.
It ain't gonna be pretty.

I am with you. I am very concerned. I think people are aware of the danger, but are not really tuning into how devastating this "recession" is going to be.
Could you enlighten on the gold and silver? Some people may not understand why you should make those purchases.
If (when) the dollar tanks you need to have something of value that you can use for currency. Gold and Silver fill this void.
The problem is it would have been better to purchase a few months ago now it's selling for about $800 an ounce...silver isn't as bad.
Another piece of advice I found on another blog is to keep a jar of nickels. They still have real metal in them so they have a value beyond their $.05 (pennies to do actually b/c of the copper).
But more then that FOOD/WATER and simple tools is key. Now would be a good time to learn to garden, fix bikes (gas low or simply expensive you're gonna need transportation), get to know your neighbors and if you can, move out of potentially violent areas.
Americans haven't really had to suffer since WWII. And I'm scared. My daughter, my mother and my two sisters. We're a house full of women and well with the Hovey Street Murders...we see how well that can work out.
Sorry to make this so long but one more thing now is the time to get your health in order. Lose weight, wean yourself off of medications, stockpile them if they are absolutely necessary...just do wha t you can to be in the best health possible.
I've seen this coming for a couple of years now and for various (let's call it denial) didn't act but now I'm gonna do what I can to position and protect my family for what is likely to be a devastating recession/depression.
I'd strongly urge/encourage everyone else to do the same.
