Queen Latifah - Jenny Craig Spokesperson

I have very mixed feelings about Queen Latifah's new gig. All that talk about being "plus size and loving it" and now it's about a "healthy lifestyle" and not about "a dress size." Sounds a bit fishy to me. A lot of black women struggle with weight loss and being healthy. I'm not sure if Queen Latifah is the best role model for black women and weight loss or is she the best person for Jenny Craig to sell their "temporary diet" to black women? Considering that Queen Latifah has been connected for years to one the top personal trainers to the stars and has not lost an ounce, I am very suspect of her role with Jenny Craig. What do you think?

I thought Latifah lost weight a few years ago. That's what I read, but maybe I'm wrong. I don't know how positive this will be. I do think it's important to be healthy. I struggle with weight loss issues as do a lot of black women. But Jenny Craig is a temporary diet solution. It is not a permanent lifestyle change. So, even if you use the diet and loose weight it probably won't stay off. Latifah's probably getting paid big bucks to do this.

That trainer is her girlfriend.

She's working out with her but not the type that 'll help you lose weight.

She did lose weight some years back but has put it back on (my guess is its that relationship weight...you know you get comfortable and stop all the working out 'cause u find your man/woman) in recent years.

I know their "other" connection and I purposely avoided that. I don't care about her sex life, but I do care about her stepping into health issues about black women.

You may be right about quitting your workout because you're happy in a relationship. That's actually funny because I'm sure a lot of women will identify with that.

Professor Tracey,

I wonder about Ms Owens. She takes roles that are very stereotypical at times when it seems she would not have to.

At this point I'm wondering if she is really just about making as much money as possible.

I don't fault her if that's the case, but I do fault her for taking certain roles.

And doesn't she have or promote a line of clothing for larger womwn?

The relationship weight is the reason why I'm going back to the gym starting this Saturday. Me and my bf will be starting our memberships together. Relationship weight hit him as well. I'm looking forward to joining that gym because they have state-of-the-art machines and also offer yoga & pilates.

I also plan to go organic. The FDA's scaring a sista. They've approved the production of cloned meat and they're not requiring that meat packages be labeled "cloned."

Going organic is gonna be costly but, it's a worthwhile, long-term health investment. I've heard that Trader Joe's is more affordable than Whole Foods so that will be my store of choice.

@mes deux cents

She's a spokesperson for Curvation. It may possibly be her own line or she may be an investor.

I wonder about Latifah's choice of roles as well. I mentioned to my friends about the '03 Ebony article that discussed how some feel she's cooning. One friend said "She's just playing a role? What is there to take so seriously" & she rolled her eyes. The other friend said that "She's from Newark (NJ) so acting ghetto in a movie can be expected."

I don't know what I was supposed to take from the other friend's comments but that girl's a Newark native & her mom's a former Blk Panther *Shrugs*

"relationship weight" LOL! That's a great phrase. I am going to be very interested in black women's reactions to her progress.

Hey all, did weight loss help or hurt Missy Elliott?

Monique January 24, 2008 at 3:25 PM

Weight loss did not affect Missy at all, she wasn't a sex symbol before and she is not now. She did not change her style of clothes or image just because she lost weight.

I think QL is gonna lose like 20 lbs, she can't lose that much weight b/c she won't qualify for all those mammy type roles in Hollywood she has been getting. She gets more roles than all the black skinny girls in Hollywood. Her career is better than Halle's.
Hollywood just doesn't have many roles for a sexy black woman

Off topic for a minute:

Could somebody please name a movie that Latifah has starred in where she was not in prison, just released from prison, working in a prison, heading to a prison or doing some illegal activity that would land her in prison? Is Hairspray the only one??

Soulbrotha she was in beauty shop. I don't think she really cares about her weight because she claims that fat is were it's at. She say she is comfortable in her skin.
