As A Mother Serves In Iraq, Her Son Is Murdered In The American War Zone
This is Jamiel Shaw, Jr., a dedicated and talent student athlete on his way to college next fall. He lived in a tough neighborhood, but kept himself focused on school and athletics. He was murdered Sunday, blocks from his home, close enough to home for his father to hear the shots and to find his dying son lying on the sidewalk.
Jamil's mother is currently serving her second tour of duty in Iraq. Instead of the hero's welcome she deserves, she will be returning home a devastated mother who has lost her son to gang violence. The same kind of violence, Jamil's parents worked hard for him to avoid. The police have no suspects. This is truly a senseless crime.

Truly heartbreaking. This kid was well on his way and those losers ended his life. I really feel for his family.
a unc student was found shot to death on a road in chaple hill, nc yesterday. i fully agree that all this "to and fro" killing is just too much. and the occurrence of it is shocking & startling.
we don't know all the details - i need to tune in to the npr news-but i do know she was student body president, she was a morehead scholar, she was a poly-sci / bio major.
like this young man-this young woman sounds like she was a great person.
i wonder what they were put here to do? to become....
Wisdom: the sadder part is, the media has had full blown coverage on the stories about the coeds murdered in NC and @ Auburn, but this is the first time I've heard/read this story about Jamiel Shaw, Jr., and I'm a cable and local news junkie. I know stating this recurring fact is pointless, just thought I'd point it out to further explain why I love visiting the Black blogosphere.
RIP Jameil. His father was even a positive influence in his life, and he still dies at the hands of gang fools. Makes you not wanna let your kids leave the house.
It seems that the more you have going for you as a black person, the more likely you will be killed. These thugs have taken their ignorance to universities, colleges, and high schools. Even I'm old enough to remember when gangsters dropped out of school, stayed on the streets, and did drugs. Now they are focusing on killing black intellectuals, students, and children.
Shame.
This story is so horrible on so many levels.
My heart aches for the families of these children and for all of us who live in a culture that worships violence in the way that we do. How else to explain the cut-em-up, slasher media/games/war machine and the people who buy and sell murder memorabilia (saw an article in the washington post on that mess).
@wisdom...yes, i too wonder what work God had for these amazing young people and then i think of all they contributed to love in their short years here. would that we use every breath we have now to be love vessels......
I am an alumni from Los Angeles High School where Jamiel Shaw went to school. It is truly a sad day when a talented youngster like this is gunned down on his own block...
peace, Villager
This is such a xad story. My heart weeps for his family.
