"The Master's Tools Will Never Dismantle The Master's House" - Audre Lorde
I'm a huge Jeffrey Wright fan, but I have one highly raised eyebrow over Beyonce playing my girl, Etta James. What do ya'll think? Anybody seen it already?

Yeah - I sort of have an eyebrow raised on her playing Etta too. We will just have to wait and see.
i love jeffrey wright. I have been hearing that her performance is oscar worth?! Not sure, we will see, may go this evening.
There's a theater a tenth of a mile from my house. It's not showing the film, nor are any theaters within 12 miles of my house. The relatively small black population is one of the few drawbacks of living here.
gsutiger2, do you know quarter-life-crisis? She's a tiger, too.
I feel the same. We know Jeffrey Wright will show up and do what is needed to make this a great movie. But we gotta keep an eye on Beyonce. Etta James was a gritty chic. Beyaonce is too clean cut. But we will see after this weekend if she pulls it off.
I wasn't going to see it because I had feared that it would whitewash the dishonest nature of the Chess Brothers and because I don't think Jeffrey Wright looks enough like Muddy Waters to suspend disbelief, but I've heard good things about the film. I also found out it's directed by a Black woman so I might check it out.
again, another "not-a-real-good singer" pretending to be a good actor.
i don't need to see it or wait to see what she 'will do'. she has not gotten any better at it because she Is not an actress.
when it comes to the ARTS--to be an artist in any medium--having the talents, skill, self motivation, the desire, the passion to do what you do-- it is a gift from God--something a person is born with.
it's not about drive through service--it's a skill that is nurtured and trained-disciplined to be a certain way over time- it is raised and groomed to grow and become better.
she is just like that no talent diddy person--but pretending to be ain't gonna cut it.
She's a WRAP!
Nope I read the reviews. I heard Mos Def kilt it tho lol.
I'll wait for it to come to cable.
Professor Tracey,
Just got to say, I've been reading your blog for about 4 months now and I love it!
I have to agree with the comments about Beyonce. Not trying to hate but the girl can't sing that well. Her voice is all nasally so when I heard that she was going to portray Etta James, I threw up in my mouth a little bit. But hopefully Jeffrey Wright will save the movie as much as one actor can.
This is my first time on a site that didn't talk about how much Beyonce is the greatest singer and entertainer that ever lived! Where have you guys been all my life?
Wisdomteachesme and Cortney - you all have got to be about the only people i've ever heard say they don't think "B" can sing. Sorry, but the girl can blow! Not trying to hate on anyone, but y'all must be in you 40's or older. But I agree that her acting is TERRIBLE. Dreamgirls was a disaster, acting-wise
No. Etta James was gifted. Just because someone popular now wants to 'try' and imitate her and her life story big deal. Perhaps J. Hudson or a singer like Anita Baker or Gladys Knight could have made a better attempt. Beyonce is ok but she's a singer no an stress. And it shows. I think even Queen Latifah could have pulled off the duel roles.
Lena -
Let me add my name to the list. LOL! Beyonce is NOT a great singer. And she cannot blow! Chaka Khan can blow, Patti Labelle can blow, Gladys Knight can blow, Betty Wright can blow, Etta James can blow, there is not a current R%B singer on the scene that can sing like that.
Beyonce can't out-sing Mary J. Blidge, Jennifer Hudson, or Angie Stone. Beyonce is more in the Alicia Keys, Faith Evans category.
And the age crack works in older folks favor, not for youngsters like yourself. You have nothing to measure Beyonce against, that why your age group thinks she sounds so good. If you understood Stephanie Mills, Anita Baker, Sade, you would never say "Beyonce can blow." She barely registers a hoot on the singing scale.
I really can't stand Beyonce so NO I will not go to see this movie. I do hope they talk about the theft of Chuck Berry's music by the Beach Boys though. I am under 40 and Beyonce is in the group of entertainers who have proper breath control but no technique. She is not unique, she's just popular right now. Oddly enough I like Rhianna better and she really can't sing. I like her spunk and tenacity and she's mixed up her songs in an interesting way. Otherwise her career would've long been over. I will give Beyonce props for working so hard but in a way she has to because her voice isn't what moves people. And she cannot act her way out of a paperbag. I love Jeffrey Wright though. When it comes out on DVD I'll rent it. I'm all for supporting positive movies but not boring ones that have been miscast.
PT,
I went to see the film last night and I liked it. It was a moving story. Surprisingly, Beyonce did a decent job in the role of Etta James. I was shocked. But the thing is, Beyonce only appeared in the last 45 min.- 1 hour of the film. It is not a "Beyonce Film". So fans of Beyonce will be disappointed. All in all, it was a good film.
I'll wait for it on bootleg. I'm gonna give B her props and say she can sing. Blowing is something completely different. For artist that can blow nowadays see Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey (well back in her Vision of Love days, her music has changed up) and Jennifer Hudson.
I was skeptical when I heard she was playing Etta, and then to see her in the promos actually using her own voice to sing At Last... I knew it was a wrap. Aubrey O'Day from Danity Kane on Season 2 of Making of the Band did a wayyy better job of singing that then B.
Again, bootleg it is.
I'm 29 and know that B ain't the ish. Truthfully I always like Kelly Rowlands voice over hers. Kelly just had some whack producers and songs for her albums. But that looks like all that is about to change.
Oh and Christina Aguilera can blow better than Beyonce.
BWA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!
yes i am 46--and one thing i love is the wisdom that age gives a person. always stay teachable!
true that many of the younger folk don't have anything to measure her by pt--very true. good words.
some of yall wouldn't know what BLOW means concerning singing--if it hit you in the face! LOLOL
most of the people these younger people admire and follow can't even play an instrument let alone do they realize that their voice is an instrument.
bouncy girl ain't jack!
Etta has chracter and pure talent.
bouncy girl sings and play acts like she got it all out of some bubble gum machine.
AND i could care less about any singer that really can't play an instrument!
she can blow...that is so funny to me!!
but i do understand why some of you would believe this to be true about her and so many other 'singers' that are witin this generation....drive through talent.
hahahahahahahahah christine a.
hahahahahahaha
thanks for the laugh.
ok, now i need to get the tree out--made the mistake of mentioning maybe putting up the tree this wkend! now the girls won't stop asking WHEN WHen!!??
let me whip this thing into place and get it over with.
lololol
Dang Beyonce isn't tops but to compare her to Diddy is one of the biggest insults I've read about the child. Have y'all heard Diddy rap. He's one step behind Vanilla Ice. LOL Whew, she gets no love round these parts.
I may go see the movie. I like biopics. If I'm not mistaken Beyonce's role isn't that big in the movie, so her presence shouldn't hinder those that are interested in the story from going.
I'm in the "young" category and I never thought anything spectacular about B's voice. When B did Listen, that was the first time I thought anything significant--but that was in comparing her, to herself.
I, too, thought Kelly was a better deal. I wouldn't put B in the same category as Alicia Keys though.
But I do know J. Judson, Kelly Price, Aretha...they can SANG! B, Faith Evans,..they can sing...but so can a lot of people.
...and I love some old Whitney...You Give Good Love...
Wrote my opinion on the worst singers during my time HERE.
I am only 24 and I've never thought Beyonce could sing. She's got some catchy songs though. My mother was almost 40 when I was born so I was raised listening to some great singers.
I'll hold out some hope for the movie and will probably try to see it because the director is a black woman. But I won't hold my breath though.

I haven't but I will def. check out the blog. Thanks!
I saw it this past Sunday and was pleased with Jeffrey Wright..dang that boy is bad....
Beyonce didn't do too bad...she was actually pretty ok...I like her and I like her music (call me shallow)...but I do understand the criticisms and the polarizing ambivalent feelings about Beyonce...
I read this on a blog and it stayed in my head..."Beyonce's voice is decent but it climaxes too soon...she doesn't have the gift of knowing how to build/stack her voice"...it was and has been the best description about what bugs me about her...
@ TD1010,
I read the following comment on another blog and couldn't agree more"
"Beyonce is one of the most overrated ASS acts in the industry. She has been on the scene for a month and already she is a bore, snore, and just predictable. If she isn't recycling and stealing ideas, she's lying about writing credits. I guess talking about her so called private life didn't do much to help sales. Fake and phony should be added to her resume as well. Beyonce needs to step her game up or sit down. She needs to sing timeless music if she wants to be an icon. Now that the movie had a "Glitter" moment. Hopefully the yodeling hoochie will have a Mariah like meltdown and take a loooong overdue break and discover her identity so that she can build a legitimate brand and not off the backs of other successful celebrities."
