Ta-Nehisi Coates Is Right - Symbols Do Matter

Look at the faces of those little boys! Particularly the one with the light blue shirt with the white lettering on it. Mr. Coates is absolutely right, symbols matter.

Absolutely. I love going on Jack and Jill Politics and seeing the pictures of Black children with Obama. It makes me feel good every time.

Sometimes you don't know all the things you can be unless someone tells you or you see someone like yourself.

Obama knows it, too. That's why some of the best slide shows on Huffpost have been Obama at rallies showing kids just glowing when he shakes their hand.

The symbols don't even have to be Black.
I have the same image of Bobby Kennedy shaking my little brother's hand in Riverside right before RFK was shot.
It's the symbol of hope and justice that matters.
This symbol is important because it shows a more inclussive view of what is seen as good.
