Tavis Smiley, Wells Fargo, And The NAACP.....Oh My!
Tavis Smiley has Wells Fargo as a major sponsor for the 10th State of the Black Union and the NAACP names Wells Fargo as one of the most nefarious and notorious lenders who screwed black folks with sub prime loans. The same Wells Fargo, the NAACP is now suing. Uh, where's Mr. Tavis "Accountable" Smiley now? This won't do.
I know I'm not that only one that thinks Mr. Smiley's choice of sponsors stinks to high heaven or is troubled by his silence on this mess. My blogging sista Genma at her blog, Genma Speaks, speaks truth to power on this issue. Anyone else have any thoughts on this little conundrum for Mr. Smiley? Cause it's sho' mighty quiet in his little neck of da' woods. Crickets, nothing, nada.

In defense of Tavis he got taken off the air in Los Angeles about 5 or 6 years ago for taking on Comp USA and Black Folks didn't really back him. I mean it's fair to take Tavis to task over his sponsership choices but we must also back our people when they are out front so they don't sell out. IE Juan Williams Dig?

Actually Mista Jaycee, I believe it was Tom Joyner that really smashed Comp USA to back up Tavis and tons of black people supported that boycott, so it isn't really true that black folks didn't back up Tavis.
I was living in L.A. when that jumped off, Tavis was on NPR's news and notes and doing guest shots on the Tom Joyner Show, so he really didn't have a show to get taken off the air. He quit news and notes and landed on his feet at PBS. It was Tom Joyner that lost his slot on Los Angeles radio for a very long time.
There are some myths that have sprung up around Tavis Smiley that black folks need to start looking harder at. Like this crap with Wells Fargo.
I'm not defending Tavis. He's well aware of his actions and his lack of screaming out for everyone else to be accountable. He just reinforced his position on Meet the Press this past Sunday. he can't have it both ways.

You know when I watched the state of the black union I noticed that Smiley kept licking his lips. That pink tongue kept darting around. I thought to myself even his body knows what he really is, a snake. I am not the least bit surprised to learn that he went with this bank. There is one thing one must always acknowledge when dealing with that man, though he wraps his BS in caring for the community, it really is about promoting Tavis Smiley.

Agreed lol. I said the exact same thing as Professor Tracey when the bloggers @ Jack & Jill Politics posted about the NAACP taking on Wells Fargo. And one of them said this "wasn't about Tavis". That's true, it's about Wells Fargo, but my point was that I'm waiting for Tavis to talk about "accountability" when it comes to Wells Fargo, and not just Obama. He is a snake, but he's not that slick because a lot of people can see through his B.S. and that's why he left the Tom Joyner show.
Well Maxine Waters brought it up at SOBU to Tavis' face so we'll see if she gets invited back next year. He'd be a fool not to but we'll see....
